The Effect of Shorter Duration of Treatment Regimen to Medication Compliance in Inactive Leprosy Patents


Abstract
Chemotherapy of leprosy was lifelong since eighties, thus patient compliance was poor, drug intake was frequently irregular, and high drop-out rates were common. The need for regimens of shorter duration therefore increasingly obious. In 1981 WHO recommended multidrug regimens with shortest possible period. To obtain high efficacy of these regimens regular intake is essential factor.
The purpose of this study was evaluate the effect of shorter duration regimen to medication compliance in inactive leprosy patients. Patient compliance with chemotherapeutic regimen including dapsone can be monitored by urine tests.
The subjects of this study was 145 leprosy patients lived in resettlement village in Kyoungpook Province who were tested DDS in urine in 1984, Y ¢¥989 and 1990. In 1984 and 1985, patients received DDS monotherapy and in 1989 and X990, they recieved multidrug regimen including DDS.
The results were as follows.
1. Before and after MDT regimen, the number of patients who recieved regularly were 9 (6 %) and23 (15 %) respectively.
2. After MDT regimen the number of patient who were increased medication compliance were 57 (39 %).
3. There were no significant difference in compliance increment by age, degree of deformity and duration of dease.
